Radio Code Kia Sportage IV

The fourth-generation Kia Sportage definitively broke with the image of the cheap Korean car. With sharp European-inspired design, a seven-year factory warranty and a rich standard specification, the Sportage IV positioned itself right in the middle of the crowded SUV segment. The 7- or 8-inch touchscreen was one of the car's strongest points. But as with all modern infotainment systems: after a power interruption, the system asks for a code — and not everyone has it to hand.

Which radio is fitted in the Kia Sportage IV?

The Sportage IV (QL, 2016-2021) came as standard with one of three audio systems:

  • AVN 4.0 — the basic infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (after a software update). No built-in navigation.
  • UVO3 Navigation — the navigation system with an 8-inch screen and the Kia UVO3 connected services platform. Real-time traffic, telephone assistance.
  • JBL Premium Sound — the JBL audio package with twelve speakers and an amplifier in the top trims. Based on the UVO3 platform.

All three use a four-digit security code.

Why does your Sportage IV radio ask for a code?

The Kia Sportage IV radio locks automatically after every power interruption. During a battery change, a blown fuse or electrical work at the garage, the touchscreen displays a PIN entry screen on restart.

The code is unique to the serial number of your infotainment system. A stolen unit is completely worthless in another car without the matching code.

Where do you find the radio code without removal?

  • Car documents — when delivered new from Kia, a card or sticker with the PIN code was included in the document pack.
  • UVO3 menu — on the UVO3 and AVN 4.0, the serial number is available digitally via Settings.
  • Kia dealer — with the car's VIN, a Kia dealer can retrieve the code.

How do you find the serial number of your Sportage IV radio?

Via the menu (recommended)

1
Start the car or turn the ignition to position II.
2
Tap Settings (gear icon) on the home screen.
3
Go to System Information, About this device or Software.
4
The serial number is shown in the overview. Note the number carefully. The distinction between the letter O and the digit 0 is important. ### Via removal If the menu is unreachable due to a full lockout: What you need: - Plastic pry tools - Torx T20 screwdriver Step by step:
1
Turn off the ignition.
2
Remove the centre panel around the screen with plastic tools.
3
Unscrew the display unit.
4
Pull the unit forward five centimetres.
5
Read the serial number from the sticker on the side.

How do you enter the radio code?

AVN 4.0, UVO3 and JBL Premium

All Sportage IV systems use the touchscreen for code entry:

1
Start the car or turn the ignition to position II.
2
The touchscreen automatically displays a PIN entry screen.
3
Tap in the four digits using the number pad.
4
Tap "OK" or "Confirm".
5
With the correct code, the system unlocks immediately.

What do you do with a locked Sportage IV radio?

After three incorrect attempts, the system temporarily locks. You will see a wait timer or a lockout message on the screen.

Solution:

1
Leave the ignition on — engine off, key in position II.
2
Wait sixty minutes without turning the key.
3
The screen will then ask for the code again.
4
Enter the correct code. Do not disconnect the battery. This restarts the lockout counter.

Common mistakes

  • Code from the Sportage III — the third generation (SL) uses different systems. The codes are not interchangeable.
  • Confusing the UVO code with the radio code — the UVO connected services have a separate password. The radio code is the four-digit PIN requested after a power interruption.
  • Using the serial number from the dashboard plate — the chassis number (VIN) is not the radio's serial number.
