Which radio is in the A4 B7?

The Audi A4 B7 (2004-2008) shares the VAG platform with, among others, the Volkswagen Golf and Passat, and this is reflected in the audio system too. Three variants came as standard:

Chorus 2 is the entry-level variant — a single-DIN radio with CD player. PR code in the sticker booklet: 8UC or 8UL. Requires a 4-digit code after a power loss.

Concert 2 / Concert 2+ is the mid-range radio with slightly more features than the Chorus, such as a better equaliser and sometimes an SD card slot on the Concert 2+. PR code: 8UD. Here too: 4-digit code after a power loss.

Symphony 2 is the top of the range — same housing as the Concert, but with a 6-disc CD changer and better audio processing. PR code: 8UM. The same 4-digit code as the other systems.

RNS-E is the DVD navigation system that was optionally available for the B7. This system also has a 4-digit code, but the procedure for reading the serial number differs (see below).

> Note: the A4 B9 has no radio code. The A4 B9 (2015 onwards) has the MIB2 system that is fully VIN-linked. That system doesn't ask for any code after a power loss. Only the B7 and earlier B generations with Concert, Chorus or Symphony use the classic code.

Where do you find the radio code?

Audi supplied a card with the radio code on it with new cars. Possible locations:

In the front of the owner's manual (often stuck in or loose)
Glovebox (sometimes stuck to the inside)
Service booklet
Loose among the vehicle documents

No card? Then you'll need the AUZ serial number of the radio.

Reading the AUZ serial number

The serial number of Audi radios always starts with AUZ and can be found in three ways.

Method 1: sticker on the radio

After removing the radio, there's a sticker with the AUZ serial number on top or on the side of the unit. This is the most direct method.

Method 2: via VCDS

Do you have a VCDS (VAG-COM) diagnostic cable?

Connect VCDS to the OBD2 port.

Open Select Control Module.

Choose module 56 (Radio).

Click Advanced Identification (1A).

The serial number appears in the list. ### Method 3: display during code entry Some Concert/Chorus variants show the AUZ serial number directly on the display as soon as code entry is active. Note it down straight away.

Removing the radio from the A4 B7

For method 1 you need to take the radio out. On the B7 this is easy enough with the right keys.

What do you need?

Four DIN keys (official Audi part: 8E0051530, alternative: CT22AU01)
Optional: plastic trim tool

Step by step

Turn off the ignition.

Insert two DIN keys into the horizontal slots on the left of the radio.

Push the keys slightly outwards (sideways pressure) — you'll feel the radio release.

Pull the radio straight forward.

Slide the radio five to ten centimetres out and disconnect the connectors and aerial cable. On the top of the radio is the sticker with the AUZ serial number. Note it down in full.

Serial number of the RNS-E

The RNS-E is an exception. On many units the serial number sticker had already been removed when delivered from the dealer. You then have two options:

Engineering mode:

Turn on the RNS-E.

Press the NAV button.

Hold the top-left cursor button for 5 seconds.

Then hold the top-right cursor button for 5 seconds until the screen changes.

The AUZ serial number is visible in the engineering menu. Via VCDS: module 56, Advanced Identification — same procedure as above.

Entering the code on the A4 B7

The entry method for the Audi Concert, Chorus and Symphony differs from BMW and Mercedes. Pay attention to the P.SCAN + RDS combination.

Turn the ignition on (position 1, engine off).

Turn on the radio — the display shows SAFE or CODE.

Press and hold P.SCAN and RDS simultaneously until 1000 appears on the display. Release.

Use preset buttons 1 to 4 to set the four digits. For each position: press the button repeatedly until the correct digit appears. - Example for code 4767: press button 1 four times, button 2 seven times, button 3 six times, button 4 seven times.

Check the four digits on the display.

Confirm the code by pressing and holding P.SCAN and RDS simultaneously again until the display changes. > You have a maximum of one minute for the entire entry. If it takes longer, the display resets and you start again. With a correct code, SAFE disappears from the display and the radio plays immediately.

Solving a lockout

After several incorrect attempts the radio locks itself for an hour.

Leave the key in ignition position 1. Keep the radio on.

Wait one hour until the lockout period expires.

Don't disconnect the battery — that restarts the timer.

After the hour you can try again. Use the waiting time to confirm the serial number and check the code before you try again.
