Radio Code Audi A4 B8

The Audi A4 B8 brings you into contact with two very different worlds of car audio. On the one hand: the familiar Concert or Symphony, a straightforward DIN radio with an AUZ serial number and a 4-digit code that you can quickly request. On the other hand: the MMI system with a separate screen unit, HDD navigation and a configuration that is partly tied to your car's VIN. Which world you live in determines how you proceed.

The A4 B8 was built from 2008 to 2015 and had several audio and navigation options:

Concert 2+ is the most common entry-level radio for B8s without navigation. A single-DIN unit in the centre console with a CD player, AM/FM and, later on, SD card support. After a power interruption, the display shows SAFE or CODE. This system works with a classic 4-digit code linked to the AUZ serial number.

Symphony 2 is the more elaborate variant without navigation, featuring a 6-disc CD changer and higher sound specifications. Same DIN housing as the Concert, same code system.

MMI Basic (3G) is the entry-level navigation variant of the third MMI generation. A 6.5-inch screen higher up in the dashboard, a rotary dial in the centre console and HDD navigation. Whether this system has a traditional code depends on the configuration — some early B8 versions still have a classic code, later ones are VIN-linked.

MMI Plus (3G+) is the top-range navigation system with a 7-inch screen, a joystick next to the gear lever and handwriting recognition. This system is VIN-linked on replacement; SCN coding via a dealer or VCDS specialist is then required.

> Quick identification: Look at the centre of the dashboard. Is there a screen higher up in the dashboard than the radio opening? Then you have MMI. Just a DIN opening without a separate screen? Then Concert or Symphony.

The serial number of the Concert and Symphony always begins with AUZ followed by alphanumeric characters. You can find it in two ways:

If your A4 B8 has an MMI 3G Basic or 3G Plus, there are two scenarios:

You have the same car and the MMI won't work after a power loss: That's unusual for older systems — the MMI Basic can sometimes still have a traditional code. Consult your dealer or a VCDS specialist.

You've bought a separate MMI unit: In that case, VIN linking is the issue. The MMI is tied to the VIN of the donor car. Re-registering it to your VIN requires SCN coding, which is only possible via VCDS with full write permissions or through an authorised Audi dealer.
