Radio code Hyundai i20 II

The Hyundai i20 is a compact city car you'll come across everywhere. After a battery change or a flat battery caused by leaving the interior lights on, the display suddenly reads "CODE". With Hyundai there's a handy quirk: you may be able to work out the code yourself.

Which radio is fitted in the i20 II?

The Hyundai i20 II came as standard with a Mobis OEM radio — Mobis is Hyundai's parts division. In base trims this is a simple AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims (Premium, Style) got a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.

Both variants have a four-digit security code. The touchscreen model differs in the entry procedure — more on that below.

Mobis OEM radio (button radio)

You'll recognise the standard Mobis OEM radio by its compact display and six preset buttons. This model has a CD slot, an AUX input and usually a USB port on the side. The display shows "CODE" in white or green letters after a power interruption. The serial number on the back begins with 96180 or a similar Mobis part code, followed by a string of numbers and letters.

Mobis touchscreen (CarPlay/Android Auto)

The touchscreen model — available from 2016 in Style and Premium trims — has a 7-inch capacitive screen and supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, DAB+ and Bluetooth telephony. After a battery change this model doesn't show "CODE" on the touchscreen itself, but a separate code entry window that appears before the normal start-up screen. You type the four-digit code in via the screen. If you don't enter the code, the system stays on the code entry screen and further use isn't possible — music, navigation and phone are all locked until the correct code is entered.

The 1212 trick: calculate the code yourself

On many Hyundai (and Kia) radios a simple formula works to calculate the code:

Find the serial number of the radio (see further down for how).

Take the last four digits of the serial number.

Add 1212 to them.

The result is your radio code. Example: Serial number ends in 3456 → 3456 + 1212 = 4668 → try code 4668. What if the result has more than four digits? Then subtract 10000. Example: serial number ends in 9001 → 9001 + 1212 = 10213 → 10213 − 10000 = 0213. Then enter 0213 (including the leading zero). Note: This method works on around 60 to 70 per cent of Mobis units. On the rest it's wrong — in that case you'll need the code via the serial number. Feel free to try it, but don't rely on it blindly. It works best on radios from before 2017; newer Mobis units sometimes use a different coding method.

Hyundai supplied a code card in the document folder with the i20. Look in:

On a second-hand i20 this card is often no longer present. In that case you'll need the radio's serial number to request the code again.

Removing the radio

The Mobis radio in the i20 II is screwed in behind a dashboard panel.

Steps:

Remove the trim panel around the radio and climate control.

Undo the screws on the sides of the radio.

Slide the radio forwards.

Read the serial number off the label on the back. On the touchscreen model the panel is slightly larger and the screen is anchored deeper in the dashboard. Also remove the trim surround around the screen before undoing the screws. Be careful with the ribbon cables on the back of the screen — they're fragile.

Entering the code

Standard radio (with buttons)

Turn the ignition on. The display shows "CODE".

Press button 1 for the first digit.

Use buttons 2, 3 and 4 to set the remaining digits.

Confirm with button 5 or button 6. ### Touchscreen

The screen shows a code entry field immediately after start-up.

Enter the four digits via the screen by tapping the numbers.

Press OK or Enter to confirm.

With a correct code the entry screen disappears and the system starts up normally. On the touchscreen model you cannot enter the code via the physical buttons around the screen — those are shortcuts for volume and source selection, not code entry.

Lockout

After three to five incorrect attempts the radio locks. Leave the ignition on for thirty to sixty minutes. After that "CODE" appears again and you can try again.

On the touchscreen model the screen shows "WAIT" or a countdown timer. Turn the ignition on and wait until the timer reaches zero. Don't switch the ignition off in the meantime — that restarts the waiting time. After the lockout you get three new attempts.

Hyundai's lockout is temporary and never permanent, even after repeated errors. This is different from Opel, where ten incorrect attempts lead to a permanent lock.

Yes, most i20 II examples with the standard Mobis radio need a four-digit code after a battery change. Later models with the Bluelink system (2019+) don't have a code.

With many Mobis radios you can calculate the code yourself: take the last four digits of the serial number and add 1212. This works on roughly 60 to 70 per cent of Mobis units, but not on all of them.

Use preset buttons 1 to 4 to set the four digits. Confirm with button 5 or 6 (depending on the model). On some touchscreen models you enter the code via the screen.
