Radio Code Mazda 3 BK

The Mazda 3 BK arrived in 2003 as the successor to the popular 323 and became one of the best-selling compact cars in Europe. The car is now well over twenty years old, but plenty are still on the road. Battery replacements are a regular occurrence at this age — and with every battery change the Panasonic radio may ask for a code you forgot about long ago.

The first-generation Mazda 3 (BK platform, built from 2003 to 2008) has a Panasonic OEM head unit. This is no coincidence: Panasonic was a regular supplier to Mazda during that period.

The radio can be identified by the part numbers FA07569A or BP4M 66 ASO — two numbers for the same unit, depending on how you look it up. Technical specs: AM/FM reception, CD player, 4x42 watt maximum output.

Higher trim levels (Sport and GT) had the optional Bose 9-speaker system. This adds an external Bose amplifier, but the head unit remained the same Panasonic. Note: Bose radios and non-Bose radios are not interchangeable due to the different amplifier architecture.

The security code for this radio is a four-digit number.

Don't confuse the BK with the third-generation Mazda 3 BM (2013–2018). The BM has the Mazda Connect infotainment system — a modern 7-inch touchscreen setup with no traditional security code. After a battery change it simply starts up, no code needed.

This article is exclusively about the BK (2003–2008). Have an in-between generation BL (2009–2013)? That also has a code, but a different radio system.

Step by step

The Panasonic radio's serial number is on a white sticker on the side of the chassis. The format is:

CQ- followed by letters and numbers — for example CQ-MX1480AK.

This CQ number is what you need to request the radio code. Copy it in full, including letters and without spaces.

Reading tips

• The sticker is sometimes on the right-hand side, sometimes on the left — check both sides.
• Use a torch or your phone. The sticker is often just out of view from the front.
• For damaged stickers: a barcode scanner app on your phone can sometimes still read the code from the barcode.

For years there's been a story circulating online about a possible master code for the Mazda 3 BK Panasonic radio: 3511. This code is said to unlock the radio on some units without needing the serial number.

What's the reality? The code 3511 does indeed work on a portion of BK radios — but certainly not all of them. Panasonic produced several production series for Mazda, and not every series shares the same master code. Its effectiveness depends on the specific part number and production date of your unit.

Advice: Only try 3511 if you have plenty of code attempts available and if you haven't yet been able to obtain the correct code. If it fails, you'll have used up an attempt and the radio will be locked out for a short time. When in doubt, always request the code via the serial number first — that gives you certainty.

After two or three incorrect code attempts, the radio locks out. The display shows "ERR" or stops responding entirely.
