Which radio is fitted in the Mazda 6 GH?

The second-generation Mazda 6 (platform GH, 2008–2012) has a Panasonic OEM head unit. Panasonic was Mazda's regular audio supplier during this period — a partnership that goes back to the Mazda 3 BK and continues right up until the switch to Mazda Connect.

The radio has AM/FM reception, a CD player, a USB input and an AUX port. The exact model designation varies by year and market, but the CQ prefix on the serial number is always present.

On higher trims (Sport and GT) the Bose audio system was available as an option. This adds an external Bose amplifier and extra speakers, but the head unit itself remains Panasonic. Bose and non-Bose units are not interchangeable due to the amplifier architecture.

The security code consists of 4 digits.

The Mazda 6 GJ has no code — watch out for this difference

The third-generation Mazda 6, the GJ (2013 and later), has a completely different audio system: Mazda Connect, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. This system does not have a traditional security code. After a battery change it simply boots up.

Do you have a Mazda 6 from 2013 or later? Then you don't need a code and this article doesn't apply to you. Check your year of manufacture using the registration details or the VIN (position 10 indicates the model year).

Retrieving the radio code from paperwork

When the Mazda 6 GH was originally delivered, a code card was included with the documents. Look in the following places:

Document folder or service book — The card is sometimes tucked in with the warranty documents or stuck into the service book.

Glovebox — Dealers sometimes stuck the code as a sticker on the inner wall or on the inside of the lid.

With the spare keys — New cars often came with the code card and the spare key packaged together.

Mazda dealer — With your VIN and proof of ownership, the dealer can check whether the code is in the system. No card to be found? Then the radio has to come out.

Removing the radio from the Mazda 6 GH

The Mazda 6 GH has a DIN-format head unit sitting behind a decorative centre console panel. The panel needs to come off first before you can get to the screws.

What you'll need

  • Plastic trim removal tool (pry tool)
  • Phillips screwdriver PH2
  • Torch or phone light
  • Possibly: DIN release keys (on some variants)

Step by step

Turn the ignition off and remove the key.

Carefully insert the plastic pry tool along the edge of the centre console trim panel — start at the bottom right or bottom left. Work gently along all sides. The panel has around six clips.

Once the panel is free, the radio mounting screws are visible. Depending on the trim, these are PH2 screws or, on some GH trims, screws with a DIN release mechanism.

Undo the screws or insert the DIN release keys into the slots on either side of the radio until you hear a click.

Pull the radio straight forwards — five to seven centimetres. The connection cables behind the unit are long enough.

Turn the unit slightly and read the CQ serial number off the sticker on the side or top. You don't need to disconnect the cables to read the serial number.

Reading the CQ serial number

The serial number always starts with CQ- followed by a combination of letters and numbers. This CQ number is the only thing you need to request the code.

Example format: CQ-MX0570G or CQ-JF1800A

Points to note

  • The sticker is sometimes on the top of the unit. Pull the radio a little further forwards if you can't see it on the side.
  • Photograph the label with your phone for a clear view — the writing on the sticker is sometimes small.
  • The part number of the radio (starts with GS1F-66...) is not the serial number. You always need the CQ number.

Entering the code on the Mazda 6 GH

The entry procedure for the Panasonic radio in the Mazda 6 GH:

Turn the ignition on (don't start the engine).

The display shows "CODE" or a series of dashes.

Use preset buttons 1 to 4 to set each digit. Each press increases the digit by one.

Set the first digit with preset 1, the second with preset 2, and so on.

Confirm the entered code with the seek/scan button (usually the right-hand button next to the display) or with the OK button. With a correct code the radio boots straight up. Note: Some GH variants don't confirm the code with an OK button but with the tuner button. If the method above doesn't work, try the tuner button or the MODE button to confirm.

Resolving the SAFE lockout

Three to four incorrect attempts will lock the Panasonic radio. The display no longer shows the code and doesn't respond to input.

Solution:

Leave the ignition on — engine off, key in position II.

Wait 30 to 60 minutes without turning the ignition.

Don't disconnect the battery — the lockout timer will then restart.

After the waiting time, the radio asks for the code again. Every additional incorrect attempt extends the lockout. Make sure you have the correct code ready before entering it.

Bose or no Bose — does it make a difference for the code?

No. Whether you have a GH with or without Bose: the head unit is Panasonic in both cases, the CQ serial number is present, and the code request procedure is identical. The Bose amplifier has no security code of its own.
