The Golf VII marked a significant change for Volkswagen — not only in design and driving dynamics, but also in the way the radio is secured. Where earlier Golf generations used a simple four-digit code, VW introduced a new system partway through production: **Komponentenschutz**.

The transition period fell around 2015–2016. Some early 2016 models still have the traditional code, and some late 2015 models already have Komponentenschutz. The only way to know for certain is to check what appears on the display after a power interruption.

What is Komponentenschutz?

Komponentenschutz ties the radio to the chassis number (VIN) of your vehicle. The radio checks at every start-up whether the VIN matches. If it does, everything works normally. If it doesn't — for example after a battery replacement combined with a unit swap, or when the radio is fitted in a different car — the radio locks out.

The difference from the old PIN code: you cannot clear Komponentenschutz yourself with a code. You need a Volkswagen dealer, ODIS diagnostic equipment, or a tool such as OBDeleven.

Which radio does the Golf VII have?

All Golf VII radios are built by Continental on the MIB platform (Modularer Infotainmentbaukasten):

Composition Colour — The entry-level unit with a 5-inch colour screen. Not a touchscreen; controlled via physical buttons. Found mainly in Trendline trim.

Composition Media — The most common model. 6.5-inch touchscreen with proximity sensor. Standard on Comfortline and above.

Discover Media — Navigation variant with an 8-inch screen and SD card slot for maps. Available as an option across all trim levels.

Discover Pro — The flagship unit. 9.2-inch glass touchscreen, built-in navigation, gesture control. Recognisable by its seamless display with no separate buttons around the edges.

Removing the radio

The Golf VII radios are integrated into the dashboard panel. You will need:

Plastic trim tools (pry tools)
Torx T20 screwdriver

The procedure is similar to the Golf V and VI: remove the trim surround around the radio, undo the screws, and slide the unit forward. With the Discover Pro and its large screen, take extra care — the glass display is fragile.

Entering the code (early Golf VII, MIB1)

For Golf VII models with the traditional code system:

Turn the ignition on. The display shows a code-entry field.

Enter the four digits using the touchscreen or the rotary dial.

Confirm with OK. The serial number (VWZ format, fourteen characters) is printed on a sticker on the side of the unit.

When can you NOT order the code online?

If your Golf VII has Komponentenschutz (MIB2, 2016 onwards), an online radio code will not work. In that case you need:

A visit to a Volkswagen dealer (release via ODIS)
Or an OBDeleven dongle, which allows advanced users to disable Komponentenschutz themselves
