Which radio is in the Duster I?

The first-generation Dacia Duster (2010–2017, platform HS) came with three audio configurations:

Classic Radio (earliest models 2010–2012)

The very first Duster Is came with a simple Classic Radio — an AM/FM radio with a CD player in single DIN format. No frills, no navigation, no Bluetooth. Recognisable by its small, non-illuminated display.

Update List (2012 and later, base trims)

After the first facelift, the Update List from Continental became the standard radio. This is the same unit found in the Renault Clio III and the Dacia Sandero II. CD player, RDS, AUX and six preset buttons. Supports the PRE-code function.

Media Nav (option, all model years)

The Media Nav system was available early on as a paid option on higher trims (Ambiance and Lauréate). A seven-inch touchscreen, GPS navigation and a USB port completely replaced the Classic Radio or Update List. Important: the Media Nav and the Classic Radio are not directly interchangeable without a GPS antenna modification.

Retrieving the PRE-code (Update List)

The Update List base radio has a built-in PRE-code function. This lets you display a short identification code without having to remove anything.

Switch on the ignition. The engine doesn't need to be running.

The display shows "CODE".

Press and hold button 1 (far left) and button 6 (far right) at the same time.

After three to five seconds a code appears on the display: one letter + three digits. Make a note of it. That's your PRE-code. Then it's probably locked after previous incorrect attempts. Wait an hour with the ignition on and then try again.

Classic Radio: always via serial number

The Classic Radio doesn't have a PRE-code function. Here you'll always need the radio's serial number. That means: taking the radio out.

Finding the radio code in your paperwork

When a new Duster was bought, an anti-theft card was included with the documents, showing the radio code and the VIN. Look here:

  • In the document folder or the service booklet
  • In the glovebox, stuck to the inside
  • In the envelope with the spare keys

Bought second-hand? Ask the previous owner, or check with the Dacia dealer whether they still have the code on file.

Removing the radio from the Duster I

Removing the Update List

The Update List in the Duster I sits in a standard DIN slot:

Switch off the ignition.

Insert two DIN release keys into the narrow slots on either side of the radio.

Push them in until the locking pins release (click).

Slide the radio forward — ten to fifteen centimetres. The rear cables are long enough. ### Removing the Media Nav The Media Nav sits behind a two-tone dashboard insert held in place with clips. Use a plastic pry tool to lever off the surround. Watch out for the two screws that become visible afterwards. Disconnect the GPS antenna if you want to remove the unit completely — otherwise the cable is too short.

Reading the serial number

The serial number is on a sticker on the side of the radio:

  • Classic Radio / Update List: starts with 7700, 8200 or 2811 followed by six to eight digits. Duster-specific number: related to 281100003R.
  • Media Nav: typically starts with 8201 or 8200 followed by a longer string.

Use a torch or your phone light when reading it. The sticker is often in shadow.

Update List

Switch on the ignition. The display shows "CODE - - - -".

Press button 1 to select the first digit. Each press increments it.

Set buttons 2, 3 and 4 for the remaining digits.

Press and hold button 6 for two seconds to confirm. ### Classic Radio The entry method for the Classic Radio is similar, but some variants use the radio tuner buttons (up/down arrows) to increase the digits. Confirmation is then done with the OK or MODE button. ### Media Nav The Media Nav shows a numeric keypad on the touchscreen. Enter the digits and tap Confirm or OK.

Resolving a lockout

After several incorrect attempts, the radio refuses further input.

Steps:

Ignition in the "on" position, engine off.

Wait at least thirty minutes (Update List) or sixty minutes (Media Nav).

Don't disconnect the battery while waiting.
