Radio Code Mercedes B-Class W245

Many Mercedes B-Class W245 drivers only encounter the radio code for the first time when the battery finally reaches its best-by date after years of loyal service. You fit a new battery — and suddenly the small Becker display shows the word CODE. The good news: the Audio 20 in the W245 is one of the most straightforward Mercedes systems when it comes to radio codes. Look up the serial number, request the code, enter it, done.

The Mercedes B-Class W245 was built from 2005 to 2011 and sat in the compact MPV segment. Mercedes offered the W245 with two audio systems:

Audio 20 CD is the standard mid-range system by Becker. A single-DIN unit with a 5.8-inch display, CD player, AM/FM radio and, later in the production run, Bluetooth hands-free. After a power failure, the Audio 20 asks for a 4-digit code. The serial number is in the distinctive Becker BE format.

Audio 50 APS is the navigation variant, also by Becker. Same housing as the Audio 20, but with navigation via CD-ROM maps. This system also uses a traditional 4-digit code.

A COMAND NTG2 system is unusual in the W245 but not impossible as a factory option in certain markets. Check your centre console: does the radio have a separate navigation screen higher up in the dashboard? Then it's COMAND. In most W245s, that's not the case.

Becker uses its own serial number system. On the sticker on the side or top of the radio, there are two values that you'll both need:

• Model number: starts with BE followed by four digits, for example BE1492 or BE6021
• Serial number: a letter followed by seven digits, for example Y1234567 or 45012345

Both are needed to request the correct code. Note them down exactly — including the letter before the serial number, which is part of the entry.

The W245 has a standard DIN opening that's easily accessible.

Procedure

After several consecutive incorrect attempts, WAIT appears on the Audio 20 display. The radio temporarily blocks all input.

If your W245 has a COMAND NTG4 or NTG4.5 (recognisable by the separate screen higher up in the dashboard and a joystick/dial in the centre console), then the system is partly or fully VIN-linked. In that case, SCN coding via Mercedes Star Diagnosis/Xentry is required for re-registration — that's done through an authorised Mercedes dealer.

In most W245s, this doesn't apply.
