Mercedes Vito Radio Code

The Mercedes-Benz Vito W639 held a firm place on the roads. As a commercial vehicle for carers, tradespeople and courier services, but also as passenger transport for small businesses — the Vito combined Mercedes reliability with commercial practicality. With the W639, Mercedes also took a step forward in interior quality. The audio system became considerably more refined than in its predecessor, but that also made recovery after a power interruption a little more complicated.

Depending on the trim level, the Vito W639 (2003-2014) was supplied with:

• Audio 20 — the standard CD radio from Becker. A compact unit with a small display, AM/FM and CD.
• Audio 50 APS — the navigation radio with built-in maps on CD, colour screen and telephone connectivity.
• Comand APS — the premium navigation system with DVD maps, a larger screen and more connectivity. Available in higher trim levels and the Viano variant.

All three work with a four-digit security code.

The Mercedes Vito radio locks after any power interruption. In the everyday life of a commercial vehicle this means: a flat battery on a cold morning, replacing a battery after eighteen months, or an electrical fault during the MOT. Once power is restored, the display shows "CODE" or "WAIT" and the system refuses to work.

The code is tied to the serial number of the specific radio unit. Without the code, the system is unusable.

• Security Code Card — original Mercedes vehicles came with a card among the vehicle documents. On a commercial vehicle that has had several owners, this card is rarely kept.
• Mercedes me portal — owners who have registered their car can sometimes request the code online.
• Authorised Mercedes dealer — with the VIN and the serial number, a dealer can retrieve the code.

The serial number is on a sticker on the side of the radio unit. On Mercedes-Becker radios it usually begins with an "A" followed by a series of digits, such as A 168 820 3286.

Step by step

Audio 20

After two incorrect attempts the Vito radio blocks with the message "WAIT" or a wait timer.

Solution:

• Misunderstanding the rotary control sequence — the Audio 20 works with turn-to-select and press-to-confirm. Don't turn too quickly.
• Trying the code from the Sprinter or C-Class — every Mercedes radio has a unique code.
• Waiting out WAIT but switching off the ignition in between — if you switch off the ignition during the waiting time, on some variants the timer starts again.
