Which radio is in the W211?

The Mercedes E-Class W211 (2002-2009) was available with four different audio systems, depending on the trim level and the model year.

Audio 20 CD is the basic version — a single-DIN radio with a CD player made by Becker. Compact, functional and fitted with a 4-digit security code that's requested after a power loss.

Audio 30 APS is the navigation version with map navigation based on CD-ROM discs. APS stands for Audio/Phone/Navigation System. This system also uses a 4-digit Becker code.

Audio 50 APS replaced the Audio 30 during the production run — navigation via DVD discs, with better screen quality. Same security principle: 4-digit code.

COMAND NTG1 is the top navigation package of the W211. This system consists of several separate components: a dedicated DVD drive, a screen high up on the dashboard and a control panel. Do you see a code-entry screen on the higher screen after a power loss? Then you have the COMAND NTG1 — and this system also uses a 4-digit code. The NTG1 has a partial VIN link, but it still asks for a traditional code after a power failure.

Where do you find the radio code?

When the car was new, Mercedes supplied documentation containing the radio code:

  • In the owner's manual (at the front or back)
  • In the service booklet
  • On a separate card in the envelope with the vehicle papers
  • In the glovebox, sometimes stuck to the inside

Removing the radio from the W211

Removing the Audio 20 / Audio 30 / Audio 50

These units are single-DIN and sit in the middle of the centre console.

What do you need?

  • Two DIN keys
  • A plastic trim tool

Step by step:

Switch off the ignition.

Carefully remove the trim around the radio with the plastic tool.

Insert the DIN keys into the narrow slots on both sides of the radio.

Feel for the click as they engage, push the keys outwards and pull the radio towards you.

Disconnect the connectors and aerial cable.

On the side or back of the unit you'll find the white sticker with the serial number. ### Removing the COMAND NTG1 The COMAND unit is more complex than an ordinary radio.

Remove the centre console trim around the COMAND panel.

Unscrew the COMAND control unit.

Disconnect all connectors.

The DVD drive unit (mounted separately, often behind or beneath the unit) carries the sticker with the serial number. The difficulty level is medium to high — if you have no experience removing trims, it's better to call in a workshop.

Serial number: the BE format

All the Becker radios in the W211 use the same serial number format:

  • BE model number: e.g. BE1492, BE6021 or BE7894
  • Serial number: a letter followed by seven digits, e.g. Y1234567

Both are on the same sticker. Note them down exactly as they appear on the sticker.

Entering the code on the W211

The entry procedure is similar for all the audio systems in the W211:

Turn the ignition on (position 1, engine off).

The display shows CODE or an empty entry field.

Press preset button 1 repeatedly until the first digit of the code appears.

Use button 2 for the second digit, button 3 for the third and button 4 for the fourth.

Check all four digits carefully.

Confirm by pressing and holding buttons 1 and 3 at the same time until the radio unlocks. With the correct code the system starts straight away. With a wrong entry the attempt counts against you.

Solving a lockout

After several wrong attempts the W211 radio shows WAIT and locks itself.

Leave the key in ignition position 1 (engine off). Keep the radio switched on.

Wait 60 to 90 minutes for the WAIT period to run out.

Don't disconnect the battery — that restarts the waiting time.

Once the waiting time is over you can enter the code again. Make sure you have the correct code before trying again.
