The Nissan Micra K12 is a compact city car that's still very much on the road — simple, reliable, and cheap to maintain. But after a battery change the display may suddenly show "CODE" instead of your favourite station. No need to panic: requesting the radio code is straightforward once you have the serial number.

Which radio is fitted in the Nissan Micra K12?

The Micra K12 (2003–2010) was mostly supplied with a Clarion OEM radio. For European markets, Nissan fitted a Blaupunkt unit in some versions. In practice, the majority of K12s have Clarion.

Clarion

The Clarion unit in the Micra K12 is a simple 1-DIN radio with a CD player. The serial number begins with CL, PN or PP followed by twelve characters. Clarion was Nissan's regular OEM partner in Europe for many years.

Blaupunkt

Blaupunkt supplied European Nissan models, including certain Micra K12 versions. The serial number begins with BP followed by twelve characters. For some Blaupunkt Nissan units, a free unlock code is available through specific services — mention in your request that it's a Nissan Blaupunkt.

Not sure which brand you have? You'll see it once you've pulled the radio out a little: the label on the back states the manufacturer.

Where to find the radio code

Nissan supplied new K12s with a code card in the documentation folder. This is a small rectangular card, sometimes beige, sometimes white, with a 4-digit number printed on it.

Look in the following places:

1
In the service booklet — The card is often tucked into the front pages.
2
In the glovebox — Loose in the compartment or in a document wallet.
3
With the keys — The card was sometimes kept together with the key stickers in an envelope.
4
Via a Nissan dealer — With your VIN, the serial number and proof of ownership, you can have the code looked up. No card? Then remove the radio to get the serial number.

Removing the radio from the Nissan Micra K12

The Micra K12 has a 1-DIN radio opening surrounded by an interior trim panel. Removal is easier than on larger Nissan models.

Tools

  • Plastic trim lever (pry tool)
  • Phillips screwdriver PH2
  • DIN removal keys (if applicable)

Step by step

1
Turn off the ignition and remove the key.
2
Unclip the decorative trim ring around the radio with a plastic trim lever. Work carefully from the edge towards the centre so you don't break the clips.
3
Depending on the model year: remove the two screws to the left and right of the radio opening, or insert DIN removal keys into the two holes on the front.
4
With DIN keys: push the keys into the holes until you feel a click, then pull the unit forward.
5
With screws: once undone, carefully pull the unit forward.
6
Pull the unit out about five centimetres. The connectors are long enough; you don't need to disconnect them.
7
Read off the serial number from the label on the back or top of the unit. The whole removal usually takes less than five minutes.

Reading off the serial number

The serial number is on a label on the back of the unit, visible once you've pulled the radio partly out.

  • Clarion: Begins with CL, PN or PP + 12 characters. Example: CL123456789012
  • Blaupunkt: Begins with BP + 12 characters. Example: BP123456789012

Tips

  • The label is on the back — not on the side. So pull the unit far enough forward, or disconnect the connector for a better view.
  • Take a photo with your phone. The label is sometimes small and the characters are close together.
  • Watch out for the difference between the letter O and the number 0, and between I and 1. A photo makes that clearer.

Entering the code on the Nissan Micra K12

The entry procedure is identical for Clarion and Blaupunkt:

1
Turn the ignition on (position II, the engine doesn't need to be running).
2
The display shows "CODE" or a flashing dash.
3
Press preset 1 repeatedly until the first digit of your code appears.
4
Set the second digit with preset 2.
5
Set the third digit with preset 3.
6
Set the fourth digit with preset 4.
7
Confirm by holding preset 5 or pressing the ENTER button. With a correct code the radio starts immediately. With an incorrect code, the display counts down the remaining attempts.

CODE lockout: what to do after three incorrect attempts

After three wrong codes the Micra K12 radio locks out for 60 minutes. The display shows "WAIT" or automatically displays system information — including the serial number of the radio.

Tip: After the third incorrect attempt, the Clarion display automatically shows the serial number. If you don't have the code and haven't yet removed the radio, this is the moment to note down that information. Deliberately enter three random incorrect codes, note the serial number that appears, and then request the correct code.

Here's how to reset the lockout after three incorrect attempts:

1
Leave the ignition on — key in position II, don't start the engine.
2
Wait at least 60 minutes without turning the ignition.
3
Do not disconnect the battery while waiting — that doesn't reset the counter and restarts the waiting time.
4
After the hour, "CODE" appears again.
