Continental replaced Blaupunkt as Fiat's radio partner when the Panda III arrived in 2012. The result: a different serial number format and a slightly different removal procedure — but the same four digits stand between you and your music.

Which radio is in your Panda III?

The Fiat Panda III (2012-2019) switched from Blaupunkt to Continental as its OEM radio supplier. The two versions:

Continental VP1 — The basic radio in most Panda III examples. CD player, RDS, a simple display. Serial number begins with A2C followed by sixteen digits.

Continental VP2 — The slightly more advanced version with a USB port for MP3 playback. Recognisable by the USB connection on the front. Same A2C serial number format.

The switch from Blaupunkt (Panda II) to Continental (Panda III) is a common source of confusion. If you search for a BP serial number on a Panda III, you'll find nothing — the Panda III always has an A2C number.

Retrieving the radio code

With new cars Fiat supplied an anti-theft card with the serial number and the code. Check:

The document wallet — with the owner's manual or in the envelope with the vehicle papers
Inside the glovebox — a sticker from the dealer or previous owner
With the spare key — sometimes kept in the same envelope

No card found? Then the radio has to come out so you can read off the A2C serial number.

Removing the radio from the Panda III

The Panda III does not have a standard DIN clip mounting. The radio is fixed with clips and sometimes screws behind a trim panel. You'll need:

A plastic pry tool (trim lever) — prevents scratches on the dashboard
A Torx T20 bit — for any fixing screws

Step by step

Switch the ignition off completely.

Carefully insert the plastic pry tool behind the dashboard surround around the radio.

Unclip the trim — start on one side and work your way around. There are several clip points.

With the trim removed, the radio's fixing points become visible.

Remove any screws (Torx T20).

Carefully pull the radio forwards.

Disconnect the ISO connector and the aerial connection.

Read off the A2C serial number from the label on the back or side. Note: Don't force the trim. The clip points break easily if you pull too hard. Always start gently.

Reading the serial number

The serial number of the Continental VP1/VP2 is on a sticker on the back or side of the unit:

Format: A2C followed by sixteen digits — e.g. A2C12345678901234
Sometimes a shorter number is also shown; use the number that begins with A2C
Note down all sixteen digits precisely — any mistake gives the wrong code

Entering the code

Once "CODE" appears on the display:

Press preset 1 repeatedly until the first digit of your code is correct (0→9 cyclically).

Preset 2 for the second digit.

Preset 3 for the third digit.

Preset 4 for the fourth digit.

Hold preset 5 or 6 for two to three seconds to confirm. With a correct code the radio starts up immediately. With an incorrect code:

Locked out after an incorrect code?

The Continental radio has a stricter lockout policy than the Blaupunkt RD4:

After 3 incorrect attempts: the display shows "WAIT" — a waiting period of sixty minutes
After that, three more attempts are available
With repeated errors the lockout can become permanent

Waiting period procedure

Leave the ignition switched on (accessories on, engine off).

Wait the full sixty minutes — don't set an alarm for fifty minutes.

After the waiting period "WAIT" disappears and "CODE" appears again.

Now enter the correct code. Never guess at random — a permanently locked Continental radio cannot be recovered without replacement.

Panda III and Blue&Me

Some Panda III examples from the earliest production period (2012-2013) still had the Blue&Me infotainment system on board — Fiat's collaboration with Microsoft. Blue&Me offers Bluetooth calling and USB music, but has no security code of its own. The underlying Continental radio does have that code. Blue&Me only works once the radio has been successfully unlocked.
