Which radio is fitted to the Toyota Corolla E12?

Retrieving your radio code

Two options to try before removing the radio:

The original code card — When the car was first delivered, a small card with the radio code was included with the keys or the service booklet. Check inside the service booklet itself, between the pages, and in any folder containing your vehicle documents.

Sticker inside the glovebox — Some Toyota dealers stuck the code on a sticker inside the glovebox. Check the inner side of the lid and the walls of the compartment. Nothing found? In that case, you'll need to read the serial number from the physical radio unit.

Removing the radio from the Toyota Corolla E12

The radio in the Corolla E12 sits in the centre console, behind a removable trim panel. Removal is straightforward but requires a little patience with the plastic clips.

What you'll need

Plastic trim removal tool — buy one or wrap a wide flathead screwdriver in tape
Torx T20 or crosshead screwdriver — the Corolla E12 uses one or the other depending on the version
Adequate lighting (a phone torch works well)

Step by step

Turn off the ignition and remove the key.

Insert the plastic trim tool into the gap around the centre console panel — the large plastic surround around the radio and gear lever. Start at the bottom of the panel.

Release the clips by gently working the tool along the edge. The Corolla E12 has four to six clips — apply even pressure and avoid yanking.

Remove the trim panel. Note: there may be a connector attached to the rear lighting or the heater controls. Disconnect that connector before pulling the panel away completely.

You will now see the radio held in place by two screws — one on each side. Remove them.

Slide the radio approximately 10 cm forward. The wiring loom is long enough to allow this without disconnecting it.

Read the serial number from the sticker on the side or top of the unit.

Reading the serial number

The serial number is printed on a white sticker on the side or top of the Fujitsu Ten unit. The sticker also shows the part number (beginning with 86120-...) — you won't need that. You're looking for the serial number, which consists of a sequence of letters and digits.

Practical tips:

Take a photo with your phone and zoom in afterwards. Stickers are sometimes narrow and the text can be very small.
If the sticker is damaged or illegible: a Toyota dealer may be able to look up the serial number and the corresponding code using the vehicle's VIN, provided the car was originally registered through a Toyota dealer.

Entering the code on the Toyota Corolla E12

If the radio displays "CODE" or a similar message after starting:

Turn the ignition on (position II — the engine does not need to be running).

The display will prompt you to enter the code.

Use preset 1 to set the first digit. Each press increases the digit by one (from 0 to 9 and back to 0).

Use presets 2, 3 and 4 for the second, third and fourth digits.

Check the four digits shown on the display.

Press OK or MODE to confirm. On some versions: press and hold preset 5. If the code is correct, the radio will immediately switch to normal operation. If the code is wrong, an error message will appear and the radio will be temporarily locked.

Lockout after incorrect attempts

If you enter the wrong code several times, the Fujitsu Ten radio will lock out for 30 to 60 minutes. This is a built-in time-delay function, not a fault.

What to do:

Leave the ignition on — engine off, key in the "on" position.

Wait at least 30 minutes. Do not switch off the ignition or disconnect the battery.

After the waiting period, you will be able to enter the code again. Always make sure you have the correct code before attempting entry. If you are unsure about the code, retrieve it again using the serial number.
