Radio Code Toyota RAV4 III

The Toyota RAV4 III was the moment Toyota turned the compact SUV into a proper grown-up. Gone was the jeep-like character of its predecessors — in its place came a car equally at home on the motorway and in the city. With five doors, more interior space and optional four-wheel drive, the RAV4 III became the go-to choice for families who refused to choose between comfort and versatility. After more than a decade of use, however, the battery on these cars is starting to show its age — and with it comes the radio code question.

The RAV4 III (XA30, 2006-2012) came with three audio options that varied by trim level and model year:

• E7009 — the standard Panasonic-built CD radio for Toyota. DIN format, CD player, AM/FM.
• TNS410 — the built-in navigation radio with a colour screen and CD/DVD map discs.
• JBL Surround Sound — the premium audio package with eight speakers and a subwoofer, available on Executive trim.

All three use a five-digit security code (some early variants use four digits — check your owner's manual).

The RAV4 III radio locks automatically after any interruption to the power supply. Whether you have replaced the battery, suffered a flat battery, or had electrical work carried out — as soon as the power is restored the display will show "SEC", "CODE", or a number waiting for input.

The code is tied to the radio's serial number. If you replace the radio with a different unit, you will need a new code that corresponds to the serial number of that replacement unit.

• Security Code Card — when supplied new by Toyota, a small card was included with the vehicle documents. It is sometimes also found as a sticker inside the glovebox.
• TNS410 menu — on the navigation variant, the serial number can sometimes be retrieved via the service menu.
• Toyota dealer — with the VIN and the radio serial number, a Toyota dealer can look up the code.

The serial number is printed on a sticker on the side or top of the radio unit. For the E7009, you will need to pull the radio partially forward to see it.

After two or three incorrect attempts the RAV4 III radio will temporarily lock itself.

To resolve this:

• Four versus five digits — early RAV4 III models may use a four-digit code, while later ones use five digits. Check how many positions appear on the display.
• Code from an Avensis or Corolla — every Toyota radio has a unique code linked to its individual serial number.
• Operating the TNS410 via preset buttons — the navigation unit uses the on-screen interface for code entry, not the physical preset buttons.
