The Peugeot 206 was one of the best-selling small cars of its era, and a huge number remain on the road today. After eleven years in production (1998-2009), several different radio models were fitted across the range, each with its own security system.

Which radio does your 206 have?

The Peugeot 206 was fitted with three generations of radio, depending on the year of manufacture:

Philips RD1 (1998-2001) — The earliest 206s received a simple cassette radio made by Philips. It is recognisable by its dark grey fascia and small green display. These are now relatively rare.

VDO RD3 (2000-2004) — A CD radio made by VDO (later Clarion), with a slightly more modern look and an amber display. Note: some RD3 units are VIN-linked and will not operate in a different vehicle.

Blaupunkt RD4 (2003-2009) — The most common radio found in the 206. It features a CD player with RDS and either a green or amber display. The serial number starts with BP followed by fourteen digits. This is the unit you are most likely to encounter.

Where can you find the radio code?

Peugeot supplied a security card with every new car, showing the radio code. This card was kept in the document wallet alongside the service book. Also check:

Inside the glovebox — dealers sometimes attached a sticker to the inner face
In the audio instruction booklet — the slim booklet supplied specifically for the radio
With the keys — sometimes stored in the same envelope as the spare key

No card? Then you will need to read the serial number directly from the unit.

How to remove the radio

The Peugeot 206 radio is held in place by DIN clips. You will need a set of Peugeot/Citroën release keys — product code PC5-83 or CT22PE01. These typically cost between three and six pounds.

Step by step

Switch off the ignition.

Insert the two release keys into the narrow slots on either side of the radio — not into the CD slot.

Push them inwards until you feel resistance.

Gently push the keys outwards (away from each other) while pulling the radio forwards.

Slide the radio out and read the label. ### Where is the serial number? On the RD4: the serial number is on a white label on the top of the radio unit. It begins with BP and contains fourteen digits. On the RD3: the serial number may be on the side or underside. The format varies by manufacturer. On the RD1: look on the rear of the unit for a sticker bearing the Philips serial number.

How to enter the code on the RD4

The Blaupunkt RD4 — the most common radio in the 206 — uses the following procedure:

Switch on the ignition. The display will show "CODE".

Press button 1 repeatedly until the first digit of your code appears.

Do the same with buttons 2, 3 and 4 for the remaining digits.

Hold down the MODE or AS button for two seconds to confirm. If the code is correct, the radio will immediately switch to normal operation. ### Entering the code on the RD1 and RD3 The procedure is similar: use the preset buttons to select each digit, then press a different button to confirm. On the RD1 this is often the right-hand seek button. On the RD3 it varies by variant — try MODE or whichever button has a tick symbol.

Locked out after entering the wrong code?

The RD4 will lock itself after a number of incorrect attempts. The display may go blank or flash. Leave the ignition on for at least thirty minutes — on some units this is sixty minutes. Once the waiting period has elapsed, "CODE" will reappear and you can try again.

Important: the RD4 does more than play audio

The Blaupunkt RD4 in the Peugeot 206 is not just a radio. Vehicle information — including the outside temperature and warning messages — is displayed through the radio's screen. If you replace it with an aftermarket head unit, you will lose these functions. Bear this in mind before deciding to fit a different radio.
