Radio Code Peugeot 508 I

The Peugeot 508 launched in 2010 as the natural successor to the 407 — a driver's car offering greater comfort, improved refinement and a distinctly premium character. Available as a saloon, estate and later a hatchback, the 508 appealed to business drivers looking for an alternative to the usual German-dominated fleet options. Less flattering, however, is what happens when the battery gives up after eight years and gets replaced: the owner invariably ends up searching online for a radio code they never thought to keep safe.

The 508 I (2010–2018) was fitted with one of three generations of infotainment system:

• RD4 — the base radio from Continental. A DIN-format CD radio with a small display, no touchscreen and no navigation.
• RT6 — the navigation variant with a 7-inch colour screen, DVD-based navigation and a rotary-dial interface. Also known as "WIP Nav+".
• SMEG — the later touchscreen system (Système de Multimédia Embarqué et de Guidage), introduced from 2012. A 7-inch touchscreen with integrated navigation.

All three systems use a four-digit security code.

The Peugeot 508 radio locks automatically whenever the power supply is interrupted. Whether you've replaced the battery, the battery has gone flat, or an electrical component has been repaired, the system will display "CODE", "LOCKED" or a padlock symbol on restart.

Peugeot ties the code to the unique serial number of the unit. A radio removed from one 508 will not work in another vehicle without its corresponding code — making it an effective theft deterrent.

• Radio Code Card — when the car was new, a small card containing the four-digit code was included with the vehicle's paperwork.
• Glovebox — dealers sometimes stored the card loosely in the glovebox or tucked behind the service book.
• SMEG menu — on the SMEG, the serial number is available digitally. Go to Settings > System > Version or About this system.
• RT6 menu — on the RT6, the serial number can sometimes be retrieved via the service menu, though this varies by model.

RD4

The serial number is printed on a label on the side of the radio unit. You will need to slide the radio partially out of the dashboard. The number is typically an alphanumeric combination that varies depending on the production run.

The RD4 sits in a DIN slot in the centre console. You will need plastic trim tools and a screwdriver.

After two incorrect attempts, the 508 radio will lock temporarily. You will see a countdown timer or the message "LOCKED".

To resolve this:

• Trying to operate the SMEG using buttons — the SMEG system only accepts code entry via the touchscreen.
• Using the code from a 407 or 308 — every Peugeot radio has a unique code tied to its individual serial number.
• Disconnecting the battery during a lockout — this resets the waiting period from the beginning.
