Radio Code Renault Clio II

The Clio II was for many years one of the most popular small cars on the road. If you still drive one today and have recently replaced the battery, you will be familiar with the classic Renault dilemma: the radio displays "CODE" and you have no idea which four digits to enter.

Which radio is fitted in your Clio II?

The Renault Clio II came with two generations of radio:

Philips cassette radio (1998-2000) — The very first Clio II models were fitted with a Philips cassette radio, recognisable by the rounded, organic styling of its buttons. This radio does not have a PRE-code function — you will need the serial number from the sticker on the back of the unit.

Tuner List (2000-2005) — From 2000, the Tuner List by Continental (formerly VDO Siemens) became the standard fitment. This is a cassette radio with RDS and a small blue or green display. The Tuner List does support the PRE-code function.

Retrieving the PRE-code on the Clio II

The PRE-code is a short code (one letter followed by three digits) that appears on the display. It allows you to obtain your radio code without removing the unit.

On the Tuner List:

Switch the ignition on. The display shows "CODE".

Hold button 1 and button 5 simultaneously.

After three to five seconds, the PRE-code appears — for example F247.

Make a note of the code. Does 1+5 not work? Try button 1 and button 6. The button combination varies between variants. On the Philips radio: The PRE-code method does not work. You will need to remove the radio and read the serial number from the sticker.

Where to find your radio code

When your Clio II was first sold, it came with an anti-theft code card. This small card contains your radio code. Check:

The document wallet in the glovebox
The service booklet — as a loose card or sticker
With the spare keys
Some previous owners wrote the code on a Post-it note inside the glovebox

How to remove the radio

The Tuner List is secured with DIN clips. You will need:

Renault release keys — product code CT22UV01. These typically cost three to five pounds.

Steps:

Switch the ignition off.

Insert the release keys into the narrow slots on the left and right sides of the radio.

Push inwards until you feel resistance.

Carefully pull the radio straight out.

Read the serial number from the sticker. ### Serial number location The serial number is printed on a barcode sticker on the back or side of the radio. On the Tuner List, the number typically begins with 7700 or 8200, followed by further digits. The last four characters often match the PRE-code.

Entering the code

Switch the ignition on. The display shows "CODE - - - -".

Press button 1 repeatedly to set the first digit.

Use buttons 2, 3, and 4 to set the remaining digits.

Hold button 6 to confirm (hold for two seconds). If the code is correct, the radio will switch directly to normal operation.

Blocked? ERROR on the display

After several incorrect attempts, "ERROR" appears on the display. The radio will no longer respond to button presses.

The solution: leave the ignition on for at least thirty minutes. After the waiting period, "CODE" will reappear. If incorrect codes are entered repeatedly, the waiting time may extend to sixty minutes or more.

Difference from the Clio III

The Tuner List (Clio II) and Update List (Clio III) look very similar. The key difference lies in how they communicate: the Update List uses the car's CAN-bus system, while the Tuner List does not. For this reason, they are not interchangeable. The code entry procedure, however, is identical.
