Radio Code Renault Scenic III

The Renault Scenic III gave the popular MPV concept a thorough overhaul in 2009. Flexible seating, a distinctive interior with a centrally mounted speedometer, and a wide range of safety systems made it a favourite with families. One thing remained unchanged from its predecessors, though: the radio locks as soon as the power is lost, and not everyone holds on to the code for a decade.

Renault fitted the Scenic III with three different audio systems, depending on the model year and trim level:

• Radio CD — the base model, a single DIN radio made by Clarion for Renault. No screen, conventional buttons.
• Carminat TomTom Live — the navigation system with a built-in TomTom. Real-time traffic information via a GSM chip. Recognisable by the large colour screen mounted above the centre console.
• Media Nav — the later touchscreen system by LG, available from 2012 onwards across a growing number of trim levels.

Each system has its own security code, independent of the others.

Renault built an anti-theft security system into all original radio units. After any interruption to the power supply — a flat battery, a battery replacement, a blown fuse — the system locks automatically. You will then see "CODE" or a padlock icon on the display.

The code is tied to the unique serial number of your radio. That means a stolen unit is completely unusable in another vehicle.

Check these places before taking the radio out:

• Radio Security Card — a small white or beige card with the text "Radio Security Card" or "Code radio" should have come with the original vehicle paperwork. It shows both the serial number and the four-digit code.
• Glovebox — dealers sometimes left the card loose inside the glovebox or attached a sticker to the inside of the lid.
• Carminat TomTom menu — on the navigation variant, the serial number can be found in the menu: tap the Renault logo or go to Settings > System > Device Info.
• Media Nav menu — go to Settings > Version for the serial number.

On the Radio CD, the serial number is printed on a sticker on the side of the unit. You will need to slide the radio out of the dashboard to read it. It typically starts with letters followed by numbers, though the exact format depends on the manufacturer.

The Radio CD in the Scenic III sits in a DIN aperture and is accessible via the centre panel. You will need plastic trim tools to avoid scratching the trim.

The procedure differs depending on the radio model.

Radio CD

After two incorrect attempts, the radio will lock temporarily. The message may vary: "WAIT", "BLOCKED", or a countdown timer.

To resolve this:

• Using a card from a different car — every Radio Security Card is linked to one specific serial number.
• Trying to enter the code via a screen on a Radio CD — the base radio has no display for code entry; use the preset buttons.
• Disconnecting the battery during a lockout — this resets the timer and extends the waiting period.
