The Kangoo II is the workhorse of the Renault range. From delivery services to landscaping companies — it goes everywhere. And with all that commercial use comes the occasional battery change or radio repair. The result: a display that suddenly shows "CODE", with no code card ever supplied with the lease vehicle. This article explains how to get back on track regardless.

Which radio is fitted in your Kangoo II?

The Renault Kangoo II was built from 2008 to 2021, but the 2008 to 2019 models are the most common on the used market. During that period, Renault used two infotainment systems.

Update List (2008 – circa 2013)

The Update List is the base radio Renault fitted to the early Kangoo II. It is a compact CD radio featuring:

A narrow rectangular display (no touchscreen)
Six fixed preset buttons
An AUX input that can be activated via the menu
Two narrow release slots on either side of the bezel

This is the system that uses the PRE-code method — the quickest and most practical way to retrieve the radio code.

Media Nav (circa 2013 – 2019)

Later Kangoo II models and higher trim levels received the Media Nav touchscreen. You can identify it by:

A large 7-inch touchscreen integrated into the centre console
No row of fixed preset buttons
Sometimes equipped with navigation

The Media Nav also has a security code, but it is entered via the on-screen keyboard.

Retrieving the PRE-code on the Update List

The Update List has a built-in method for retrieving the PRE-code — handy when no code card was ever supplied with the vehicle, which is more common with fleet and commercial cars than you might expect.

Steps:

Switch the ignition on. The radio displays "CODE".

Press and hold button 1 and button 6 simultaneously.

Wait three to five seconds.

The PRE-code appears: a letter followed by three digits, such as K182 or A509.

Make a note of the code. You can then use the PRE-code to obtain the official four-digit radio code through a certified online service. The 1+6 combination isn't working? Try 1+5. Some variants use a slightly different button combination.

Tools required: Renault release keys (product code CT22UV01 or similar, approximately three to five pounds).

Switch the ignition off.

Insert the release keys into the narrow slots on the left and right sides of the radio.

Push the keys slightly outwards to disengage the internal clips.

Carefully pull the radio straight forwards.

Disconnect the ISO connector and the aerial plug. ### Removing the Media Nav The Media Nav is secured with screws and clips, not DIN release pins.

Remove the trim surround around the Media Nav (press-fit clips).

Undo the Torx or Phillips screws holding the unit in place.

Pull the unit forwards and disconnect the connectors. If you only need to read the serial number, full removal is not always necessary: remove the right-hand air vent beside the Media Nav to access the sticker on the underside of the unit.

The last four characters of the Update List serial number (a letter followed by three digits) are identical to the PRE-code that can also be retrieved via the display.

Entering the code

Switch the ignition on. The display shows "CODE - - - -".

Press button 1 repeatedly to set the first digit of the code.

Use button 2 for the second digit, button 3 for the third, and button 4 for the fourth.

Hold button 6 for two to three seconds to confirm.

If the code is correct, the radio will turn on immediately. ### Entering the code on the Media Nav After a power interruption, the Media Nav will prompt you for the code as soon as the system starts up. Enter the four digits using the on-screen keyboard, then tap OK or Enter on the screen.

Blocked radio

If an incorrect code is entered too many times, the radio will no longer accept input. The Update List displays "ERROR" on screen.

Solution: Leave the ignition on (radio on) for at least thirty to sixty minutes. After the waiting period, "CODE" will reappear. With repeated errors, the waiting time increases.

Note: never enter 0000. With Renault, this is never a valid radio code and it counts as an incorrect attempt.

If a Media Nav is blocked after multiple incorrect attempts, contact a Renault dealer. They can retrieve the code using the VIN number.
