The Renault Modus is a compact family car that was on the market from 2004 to 2012. It has a notably high roofline, generous interior space for its size and — like all Renaults from that era — a radio that greets you with CODE on the display the moment the battery has been disconnected.

Which radio is fitted in the Renault Modus?

Throughout its production run (2004–2012), the Modus was almost always fitted with the Update List by Continental, formerly known as VDO or Siemens VDO. This is the standard single-DIN radio found in virtually all Renault models from that period: a CD player with RDS, six preset buttons and a compact display at the top.

Higher trim levels — particularly the Dynamique and Privilege — could be optionally equipped with a Carminat navigation system. This was not fitted to every Modus and requires a different procedure to retrieve the code.

The Update List is secured with a four-digit code that activates after every power interruption.

When does the Modus ask for a code?

The radio locks automatically whenever the power supply is interrupted. This can happen when:

  • A battery is replaced or completely discharged
  • The battery is disconnected for electrical work
  • A fuse in certain circuits is replaced

The display will then show "CODE". The radio waits for the correct unlock code before it will function again.

PRE-code: retrieving the radio code without removing the radio

Renault fitted the Update List with a handy PRE-code function. This gives you everything you need to request the radio code without physically removing the radio.

How it works:

Switch the ignition on (the engine does not need to be running).

The radio will show "CODE" on the display.

Hold button 1 and button 6 simultaneously — the leftmost and rightmost of the six preset buttons.

Keep them held for three to five seconds.

A code appears on the display: one letter followed by three digits, for example B247 or F819. This is the PRE-code.

Note down the PRE-code — you can use this to request the four-digit radio code. ### Does 1+6 not work? On some Modus variants, try the combination 1+5 or 2+5 instead. If the radio does not respond at all, it may be locked after too many incorrect attempts — in that case, leave the ignition on and wait an hour.

Finding the radio code via the code card

Also check the car for the original card:

  • Anti-theft card in the document wallet — credit-card size with the radio code printed on it
  • Service book — sometimes at the back or stuck inside the front cover
  • Glove box — dealers sometimes stuck a spare sticker on the inside panel

Removing the radio (if the PRE-code method does not work)

If the PRE-code method yields no result, you can read the serial number from the sticker on the side of the radio unit. To do this, you need to partially slide the radio out.

What you need:

  • DIN release keys (e.g. CT22UV01) — available for £3 to £6

Step by step:

Switch the ignition off.

Insert the DIN release keys into the narrow slots on either side of the radio — two per side.

Push the clips slightly outwards until you feel them release.

Gently pull the radio four to five centimetres forward out of the dashboard.

Read the serial number from the sticker on the side. It typically starts with 8200, 7700 or 2811, followed by a string of digits. You do not need to disconnect the cables just to read the serial number. ### Serial number and PRE-code Interestingly, the last four characters of the serial number (one letter followed by three digits) are often identical to the PRE-code. If the display method does not work but you can read the sticker, you effectively have the PRE-code right there.

Entering the code

Once you have the four-digit radio code:

Switch the ignition on. The display shows "CODE - - - -".

Press button 1 repeatedly until the first digit appears (cycling 0–9).

Do the same with button 2 for the second digit.

Use button 3 for the third and button 4 for the fourth digit.

Check that all four digits are correct.

Hold button 6 for two to three seconds to confirm. If the code is correct, the radio switches straight to normal operating mode. ### Entering the code via steering wheel controls If your Modus has steering wheel audio controls, you can in some cases also enter the code using the scroll wheel on the steering wheel: rotate to select a digit, press to confirm and move on to the next digit.

Lockout after incorrect attempts

After an incorrect attempt, the waiting period increases exponentially. After several wrong tries, the radio will temporarily stop responding to any input.

Solution:

Leave the ignition on.

Wait at least thirty to sixty minutes.

Once the waiting period has passed, "CODE" will reappear on the display. Never enter a code at random — doing so increases the risk of a longer lockout.
