Entering your radio code — a step-by-step guide by brand

Entering the radio code sounds straightforward, but every car manufacturer has its own system. On a Volkswagen you use different buttons than on a Ford, and on a Renault different ones again than on an Opel. The confirmation button differs, the number of attempts differs, and the waiting time after a lock is different everywhere too. This article gives you a complete overview by brand.

On virtually every brand, entering the radio code works on the same basic principle: you use a series of buttons — usually the preset keys — to set each digit one by one, and then you confirm with a separate button. The system checks the code and tells you straight away whether it's correct.

What differs: which buttons you use, how you confirm, and how many chances you get. Below is the exact procedure for each brand.

These brands all use the same procedure, regardless of the model. Whether it's a VW Golf V, a VW Polo IV or an Audi A3 — the steps are identical for all RCD and RNS radio systems.

Step by step:

1. Switch on the ignition. The display shows "1000" or "CODE".
2. Press preset 1 repeatedly until the first digit of your code is correct.
3. Use preset 2, 3 and 4 to set the second, third and fourth digit respectively.
4. Check the four digits on the display.
5. Hold the seek button (right arrow / SCAN) down for two seconds.
6. The radio unlocks and starts playing.

Lock (SAFE): After two incorrect attempts the display shows SAFE. Leave the radio switched on with the ignition on for at least sixty minutes (engine off is fine). After that "1000" appears again. You then get two more attempts.

Ford used two serial number systems (M-code and V-code) but the entry procedure is virtually identical. The only difference is the confirmation button, which differs between the Ford 6000 CD and the Sony variant.

Ford 6000 CD (standard in Ford Focus Mk2, Ford Mondeo Mk4, Ford Fiesta Mk6):

1. Switch on the ignition. Display shows "CODE".
2. Press button 1 until the first digit is correct.
3. Use buttons 2, 3 and 4 to set the remaining digits.
4. Confirm with button 5.

Ford Sony (premium variant):

• Same procedure, but confirm with the asterisk button (*) instead of button 5.

Ford 5000 (older models, Ford C-Max I, Ford Ka):

• Entry via presets 1 to 4, confirm with button 5.

Lock (LOCKED): Ford is more generous than Volkswagen — you get ten attempts before the radio locks. After a lock, leave the radio switched on for thirty minutes. On the Sony variant this can be as long as sixty minutes.

Renault radios (Tuner List, Update List, Renault Megane II, Renault Clio III) use presets 1 to 4 for entry and preset 6 to confirm.

Step by step:

1. Switch on the ignition. Display shows "CODE" or "0000" (flashing).
2. Press button 1 repeatedly until the first digit is correct.
3. Use buttons 2, 3 and 4 to set the remaining digits.
4. Hold button 6 down for about two seconds to confirm.

Carminat Navigation (satnav system optional on Megane II and others):

• Entry via the wheel on the steering column — turn for the digit, press to confirm.
• Repeat for each of the four digits.

Lock: After too many attempts (typically three to five) the radio locks temporarily. Leave the ignition on for thirty to sixty minutes. The waiting time increases with each subsequent incorrect attempt.

Opel models such as the Opel Astra H, Opel Corsa D and Opel Zafira B with a CD 30, CD 70 or similar radio follow a slightly different procedure.

Step by step:

1. Switch on the ignition. Display shows "---" or "CODE".
2. Use the up arrow / preset buttons to set the first digit.
3. Press the MODE button or the right arrow to move to the next digit.
4. Repeat for all four digits.
5. Hold the SEEK button or OK button down to confirm.

The exact button layout depends on the radio type. On the CDC 40 and CDC 400 the procedure is slightly different — check the manual or the display menu.

Lock: Opel allows ten attempts, but note: after ten incorrect attempts the radio is permanently locked and waiting has no effect any more. In that case a code retrieved via the serial number (BP or PN prefix) is the only solution. So only enter the code once you're sure.

Peugeot and Citroën radios (RD3, RD4, RD45, RT3) share the same procedure because they come from the same suppliers (Blaupunkt, Grundig).

Step by step:

1. Switch on the ignition. Display shows "0000" (flashing) or "CODE".
2. Hold button 1 and button 6 down at the same time until the serial number (PRE code) appears — this is optional but handy if you don't have it yet.
3. Press preset 1 repeatedly for the first digit.
4. Use presets 2, 3 and 4 to set the remaining digits.
5. Hold preset 6 down for two seconds to confirm.

Lock: After three to five attempts the radio locks. Wait thirty to sixty minutes with the ignition on.

On premium brands the entry procedure is sometimes more hidden away in menus.

BMW (with Business CD or Professional radio):

1. Switch on the ignition. The iDrive system or the radio asks for the code.
2. Use the rotary dial or preset buttons to enter each digit.
3. Confirm with the central OK button or by pressing in the rotary dial.

Mercedes-Benz (Becker radio, BE serial number):

1. Switch on the ignition. Display shows "CODE" or a blank code screen.
2. Use the track buttons (|◄◄ and ►►|) to increase or decrease the digits.
3. Move to the next digit with the MODE button.
4. After the fourth digit, confirm by holding MODE down.

Lock on BMW and Mercedes: After three to five incorrect attempts there's a waiting time of thirty minutes to two hours, depending on the system.

Wrong radio, wrong code. Every radio has a unique code that matches its serial number. If the radio has ever been replaced, the original card no longer matches. Always check that you have the code for the radio currently fitted.

Zero or O, one or I. Handwritten codes are regularly misread. A zero (0) looks like a letter O, and a one (1) like a capital I. If needed, refer to the digital source version of your code.

Disconnecting the battery during the waiting time. On VW, Renault and Ford this restarts the waiting time — the lock is not lifted. Just leave the ignition on.

Forgetting or mixing up the confirmation button. This is a common mistake on Ford (forgetting that Sony uses an asterisk instead of button 5) and on Opel (confirming too quickly with the wrong button).

Entering the Opel code without being sure. On Opel the lock after ten attempts is permanent. Only enter the code once you're certain.
