Radio Code Ford C-Max I
Family cars and radio code problems go hand in hand. The C-Max I sat on many driveways as the roomiest option among the hatchbacks — seven bags of pasta, a football kit and two child seats all fit inside. But when a car like this changes hands or the battery gives up after ten years of service, the radio suddenly falls silent. Fortunately, the Ford 6000 CD is one of the easiest radios to unlock yourself.

Which radio is fitted in the C-Max I?
The Ford C-Max I (2003–2010) runs on the same platform as the Ford Focus Mk2 and therefore also shares its radio architecture. Three models are in circulation:
| Radio | Manufacturer | Serial number | How to recognise it |
|---|---|---|---|
| ------- | ----------- | ------------- | ------------ |
| Ford 6000 CD | Visteon | V-code | Ford logo, traditional buttons |
| Ford 4500 RDS | Visteon | M-code | No CD player, older design |
| Sony CD | Sony | V-code | Sony logo on the front |
The 6000 CD was by far the most commonly supplied radio in the C-Max I. You'll find the 4500 RDS in the earliest models (2003–early 2004). The Sony version came in higher-spec trim levels.
A practical point: early C-Max I examples (2003-2004) may still have an M-code, while later 6000 CD radios use a V-code. The method for retrieving the serial number therefore differs.
Why is your C-Max asking for a code?
Ford's anti-theft protection is active on all radios built before around 2016. When the power is interrupted — disconnecting the battery, a blown fuse, or removing the radio — the protection is triggered automatically. The display shows "CODE" and the radio will only work again once you enter the correct four-digit code.
How do you find the serial number without removing the radio?
This is the great advantage of the Ford 6000 CD: you don't have to remove the radio to find the serial number. You can retrieve it directly on the display using the front panel buttons.

How do you remove the radio from the C-Max I?
If you can't retrieve the serial number via the display, you'll need to remove the radio. The C-Max I uses the DIN system with four round corner holes in the front panel — identical to the Focus Mk2.
You'll need four DIN removal pins (type PC5-132, Ford radio removal keys). These are available for a few pounds at car accessory shops or online.

What happens after too many incorrect attempts?
The Ford C-Max I radio allows ten attempts in total. After each incorrect attempt the remaining number counts down on the display. After the tenth mistake the display shows "LOCKED".
With a LOCKED message there is no simple wait-time reset as there is with VW. A Ford dealer or specialist decoding service is then the only option.
Ten attempts sounds generous, but they go quickly. Make sure you're certain of the code before you start — don't guess.
Common mistakes
- Mixing up M-code and V-code — Use button 2+6 for M-codes (older radios) and button 1+6 for V-codes (newer radios). Using the wrong method gives no result or an incorrect code.
- Noting the serial number incompletely — The letter V or M is part of the code: not
234567butV234567. - Confirming a Sony with button 5 — On Sony radios, button 5 is not the confirmation button. Use the asterisk (*).
- Trying again too quickly after a mistake — The radio offers the option for a new attempt straight after a mistake. Double-check the digits before you enter them again.
