Ford Transit Radio Code

Carpenter's van, market-stall transporter, removals lorry or field-service delivery vehicle — the Ford Transit is at home in every one of these roles. With millions of examples on European roads, the Transit is the continent's best-selling commercial vehicle, and that comes with a downside: batteries fail, radio systems get replaced and nobody keeps the Security Code card in the vehicle for years on end. Anyone who's had their Transit in the workshop for an electrical repair is almost guaranteed to end up with a radio asking for a code.

The Transit Mk7 (V347/348, 2006-2014) is primarily a commercial vehicle, which is why it generally came with more basic audio equipment than passenger cars:

• Transit Radio — the simplest variant. An AM/FM radio without a CD player, often standard on base versions for business use.
• 6000 CD — a DIN radio with a CD player made by Visteon, available as an option or on higher-spec trims.
• 6006 CDC — fitted to some double cabs and combi versions with a six-disc changer.

All three use a five-digit security code.

Vans undergo electrical repairs more often than passenger cars. A jump-start, a new battery or a short-circuit repair interrupts the power supply to the radio. As soon as power returns, the radio displays "CODE" or "1 - - - -" and refuses to work any further.

This isn't a fault. Ford's anti-theft protection is designed to work exactly this way: without the five-digit code, the radio is a useless little box. No good to a thief as a usable part, and sometimes an annoying surprise for the owner.

With a van, the document folder isn't always kept as carefully, but there are a few places worth checking:

• Security Code Card — a small card kept with the original vehicle paperwork, showing the five-digit code and the M serial number.
• Service book — dealers sometimes noted the code on a free page.
• Sun visor compartment — some owners kept the card in the small compartment on the sun visor.
• Vehicle registration documents — when bought through a Ford dealer, the code was sometimes included in the purchase paperwork.

Found nothing? Then the serial number is the only way forward.

The serial number is on a white sticker on the top of the radio. It always starts with the letter M and consists of seven or eight digits, for example M234567. You can read it by pulling the radio partly forward.

Transit Radio and 6000 CD

After three or more incorrect attempts, the radio locks with "LOCKED" or "WAIT 1 HOUR". No further input is possible until the waiting time has elapsed.

Solution:

• Entering a four-digit code — the Transit uses a five-digit code. Four digits will never work.
• Using the wrong confirmation button — on some variants you confirm with the right arrow, on others with the power button. Try both if one doesn't work.
• Disconnecting the battery while LOCKED — the waiting timer then starts over. Just leave the radio switched on.
• Trying the serial number from a different Ford — even if they sometimes match, the code is tied to the serial number.
