Radio code Ford S-Max I

The Ford S-Max I is the MPV for those who want space without the people-carrier feel — a car that combines driving pleasure with seven seats. In practice it's still often out and about on family holidays and long trips. And after one of those long trips where the battery gave out, the S-Max radio also asks for attention.

Which radio is fitted in the Ford S-Max I?

The S-Max I (2006–2015) shares its platform with the Galaxy and C-Max, and uses the same radio ranges as the rest of the Ford line-up from that period.

Ford 6000 CD — the standard radio in most S-Max examples. A single-DIN CD radio by Visteon, recognisable by its four round corner holes. Requires a code after a power interruption.

Ford 6006 CDC — the six-disc CD changer, available as a premium option. Same mounting system as the 6000 CD (four corner holes), but with a built-in CD changer.

Sony DAB — available as an upgrade in higher trim levels (Titanium, Sport). Recognisable by the Sony logo on the front panel and better sound processing.

SYNC 1 — a touchscreen infotainment system available in the later S-Max I (2013+). Does not need a traditional radio code.

Retrieving the V serial number via the screen

On all three "code-required" models you can retrieve the serial number directly via the display:

Turn the ignition on.

Press and hold buttons 1 and 6 together for three seconds.

After a moment the radio displays the serial number — a V followed by six digits.

Write it down in full, including the V. Doesn't work? Then there may be an unknown radio type fitted, or the function is disabled. In that case you'll need to remove the radio to read the sticker.

Finding the radio code via the code card

Ford supplied a Security Code Card with new cars:

Glovebox — in the document wallet or the Audio Guide booklet
Boot — sticker on the inside of the boot lid or under the floor trim
Service book — with the VIN entry or loose inside

The S-Max I is a car from 2006–2015. Second-hand examples usually no longer have this card with them. The V serial number via the screen is then the quickest route.

Removing the radio

The Ford 6000 CD, 6006 CDC and Sony DAB have four round holes in the corners of the front panel. You'll need four DIN removal pins (PC5-132).

Step by step:

Turn the ignition off.

Insert all four removal pins into the four corner holes of the front panel.

Bend the ends outwards (away from the radio) — this releases the spring clips.

Pull the radio evenly forwards — use both hands and don't pull too quickly.

Slide it four or five centimetres out of the dashboard.

The serial number is on a sticker on the side or top. Note: Always pull the ends of the pins outwards, not inwards. The most common mistake is bending inwards, which causes the radio to jam rather than come free.

Entering the code — Ford 6000 CD and 6006 CDC

Turn the ignition on. The display shows "CODE".

Press button 1 repeatedly until the first digit appears.

Set the second, third and fourth digits with buttons 2, 3 and 4.

Check the four digits.

Press button 5 to confirm.

Use buttons 1 to 4 for the four digits.

Confirm with the asterisk (*) button — not with button 5.

SYNC 1 — no code required

Does your S-Max have the SYNC 1 touchscreen? Then the system simply boots up after a battery change. SYNC 1 stores its authentication in the vehicle, not in the radio unit.

Check this via the screen: SYNC 1 shows the SYNC logo on start-up and has a touchscreen interface.

Preventing a lockout

The Ford S-Max radio allows ten attempts. After ten incorrect attempts the radio blocks permanently with "LOCKED". Only a Ford dealer can undo that.

For a temporary block (not yet LOCKED): leave the ignition on for thirty minutes. After that you can try again.

Never enter the code as a guess — ten attempts sounds generous, but when guessing every mistake counts.
