Radio Code Ford Mondeo Mk4

The Mondeo Mk4 was Ford's answer to the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class: a spacious, well-equipped mid-sizer that was popular with both company and private drivers. There are tens of thousands of them on the used market, but a battery change or a minor repair afterwards throws the radio code out of sync. With the Ford 6000 CD, that's perfectly easy to sort out yourself — as long as you know how the system works.

Which radio is fitted in the Mondeo Mk4?

The Mondeo Mk4 (2007–2014) is bigger than a Fiesta or Focus, and that also applies to the radio unit. There are four models in circulation:

RadioManufacturerTypeHow to recognise
------------------------------------
Ford 6000 CDVisteonCD radioFord logo on front, traditional buttons
Sony CD/MP3SonyCD + MP3Sony logo on front
Sony DABSonyCD + DAB+Sony logo, DAB button visible
Ford SYNC 1Ford / MicrosoftTouchscreenLarge colour screen, no separate radio buttons

The 6000 CD was standard in most Mondeo Mk4 examples. The Sony versions were fitted in higher trim levels. The SYNC 1 touchscreen — only in certain late models — does not need a traditional radio code.

All radios that do require a code use the V-code format: a seven-character serial number beginning with the letter V, followed by six digits.

Why does your Mondeo ask for a code?

Ford built an anti-theft protection into all radios made before 2016. With every power interruption — battery change, flat battery, disconnected connector — the radio asks for the four-digit unlock code. The display then shows "CODE".

Without the correct code the radio is completely blocked. This also applies if you fit the radio in another car.

How do you find the serial number without removing the radio?

This is the big advantage of the Ford 6000 CD and Sony radios over many other brands: you can view the serial number on the display using the buttons without touching the radio.

For the Ford 6000 CD and Sony (V-code):

1
Turn on the ignition.
2
Press and hold buttons 1 and 6 together for three seconds.
3
The radio starts an information cycle — it gives a short beep and shows various data.
4
At the end of the cycle the serial number appears — a code beginning with V.
5
Note down the full code including the letter V. This works on most Mondeo Mk4 examples with a 6000 CD or Sony radio. ### Finding your code card Do you have the card but can't remember where you put it? Check these places: - The document folder in the glovebox - On a sticker on the inside of the glovebox - In the service booklet next to the chassis number entry - Under the boot lining in the luggage compartment

How do you remove the radio from the Mondeo Mk4?

Most Mondeo Mk4 radios are fitted using the DIN system: four round corner holes on the front panel. You need four DIN removal pins (also known as PC5-132 or Ford radio removal keys). They cost just a few pounds at most car accessory shops.

Note: some Mondeo Mk4 versions — particularly those with larger displays or navigation — have no corner holes but are screwed in behind a trim strip.

DIN procedure (most common)

1
Insert all four DIN pins into the four corner holes of the front panel.
2
Bend the tabs of the pins slightly outwards — this releases the spring clips.
3
Pull the radio forwards evenly.
4
Slide the radio five to seven centimetres out of the dashboard to access the label. ### Screw procedure (with trim strip)
1
Remove the plastic trim strip around the radio with a plastic prying tool.
2
Undo the four screws.
3
Slide the radio forwards.

How do you enter the radio code?

The entry procedure differs slightly between the Ford 6000 CD and the Sony version.

Ford 6000 CD

1
Turn on the ignition.
2
The display shows "CODE".
3
Press button 1 until the first digit is correct (one up each time).
4
Press button 2 for the second digit.
5
Press button 3 for the third digit.
6
Press button 4 for the fourth digit.
7
Press button 5 to confirm.
8
If the code is correct, the radio starts up immediately. ### Sony CD/MP3 or Sony DAB The procedure is the same, but confirmation works differently: - Use buttons 1 to 4 for the four digits. - Confirm with the asterisk (*) key — not button 5.

What does LOCKED mean on the display?

The Ford Mondeo Mk4 radio gives you ten attempts in total. After each incorrect attempt the system counts down. The display shows the number of remaining attempts. After the tenth error, "LOCKED" appears.

Unlike VW radios, there is no simple waiting-time reset possible once fully locked. A Ford dealer or specialist decoder service is then required.

So make sure you're sure of the code before you enter it. In doubt? Retrieve it first via the serial number.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to hold button 1+6 — You have to wait three full seconds before the cycle starts.
  • Wrong serial number notation — Write down the V too: the code isn't 123456 but V123456.
  • Confirming Sony with button 5 — On Sony radios the confirmation button is the asterisk (*), not button 5.
  • Underestimating the ten attempts — Ford gives you more room than VW, but after ten errors it's permanent. Always note down the code before you start.

Frequently asked questions

The Mondeo Mk4 (2007-2014) comes as standard with a Ford 6000 CD by Visteon. Higher trims feature a Sony CD/MP3 or Sony DAB. Later Mondeo Mk4 models (2012-2014) could optionally be fitted with Ford SYNC 1 — that system doesn't use a traditional radio code.
Press and hold buttons 1 and 6 together for three seconds. The radio starts an information cycle and displays the serial number at the end — a seven-character code beginning with the letter V. This works on the Ford 6000 CD and Sony models.
Turn on the ignition. Press button 1 until the first digit is correct, button 2 for the second, button 3 for the third, and button 4 for the fourth digit. Then press button 5 to confirm. On a Sony radio, confirm with the asterisk (*) key instead of button 5.
LOCKED appears after ten incorrect code attempts. Unlike VW, there's no simple waiting-time reset. A dealer or specialist service is then required to reset the radio.
Most Mondeo Mk4 radios are held in place with DIN removal pins in the four corner holes of the front panel. Insert all four pins, bend the tabs slightly outwards and pull the radio out. Some versions have no corner holes but are held in place with four screws behind a trim strip.
The Ford 6000 CD and Sony radio in the Mondeo Mk4 give you ten attempts before the radio goes permanently to LOCKED. After each incorrect attempt the radio counts down the remaining attempts. So be careful and only enter the code once you're sure of it.
