Radio code Ford Focus Mk2

The Ford Focus Mk2 rolled off the production line between 2004 and 2010 and, with over 125,000 units sold, is one of the most popular cars on UK roads. The radio — almost always a Ford 6000 CD — locks out after any interruption to the power supply. Fortunately, with Ford you can read the required information straight from the display.

Which radio is fitted in the Focus Mk2?

Ford offered the Focus Mk2 with two radio options:

Ford 6000 CD — The standard radio, made by Visteon. Recognisable by the oval Ford logo on the front and the green or amber display. By far the most common variant.

Ford Sony — The premium option, exclusive to higher trim levels. Recognisable by the Sony logo and a slightly different button layout. It sounds better, but the security works in the same way.

Both radios use a four-digit security code and a V-code as the serial number.

M-code or V-code? Here's how to tell which one you have

Ford used two different serial number systems, depending on the year of manufacture:

Reading the V-code via the display

Just like Renault, Ford has a built-in function to show the serial number on the display. So there's no need to remove the radio.

Turn the ignition on. The display shows "CODE".

Press and hold button 1 and button 6 at the same time.

After a few seconds the V-code appears: a letter V followed by six digits. For example: V136429.

Note this code down carefully. This is the number used to calculate your radio code. ### V-code not showing? Also try button 2 and button 6 — you may in fact have an older model with an M-code. If the radio doesn't respond at all, it's probably locked out. Wait an hour with the ignition on.

Finding your radio code

Ford supplied every car with a keycode card showing the radio code. This card typically turns up in the following places:

In the glovebox — On a sticker inside the lid, or as a loose card in the document folder.
In the Audio Guide booklet — The thin booklet about the radio that came with the owner's manual.
In the boot — Under the floor lining or on a sticker.
With the keys — Sometimes in the same envelope as the spare key.

Removing the radio from the Focus Mk2

Although you can read the V-code via the display, there are situations where you'll need to remove the radio — for example if the display isn't working or if the radio has been replaced.

What do you need?

Ford uses semi-circular removal keys, different from the round keys used by Volkswagen. The product code is PC5-132 (Autoleads). Cost: £4 to £8. VW keys won't fit.

Step by step

Turn the ignition off.

Locate the four small holes around the radio — two on the left, two on the right.

Insert the four removal keys into the holes at the same time. Push them straight in.

You'll feel a slight click when the keys engage behind the springs.

Pull the radio straight forward. It slides out without resistance.

Read the serial number off the label on the top or side. The label shows several numbers. You're looking for the V-code (starts with V) or the M-code (starts with M).

Entering the code

Ford 6000 CD

Turn the ignition on. The display shows "CODE".

Press button 1 to set the first digit. Each press increases the digit.

Use buttons 2, 3 and 4 to set the remaining digits.

Confirm with button 5. ### Ford Sony

Same procedure: buttons 1 to 4 for the four digits.

Confirm with the asterisk button (*) — not with button 5. This difference between the Ford 6000 CD and the Sony is a common mistake. Check which radio you have before entering the code.

Locked out? Here's how to reset it

After ten incorrect attempts the Ford 6000 CD locks out. Yes, ten — Ford is more lenient than Volkswagen and Renault. The display shows "LOCKED".

The reset:

Turn the ignition on.

Leave the radio on for at least thirty minutes.

After the waiting time, "CODE" appears again.

You have another ten attempts. On the Sony variant the waiting time can be longer (up to sixty minutes).

SYNC systems: no code needed

Some later Focus Mk2 models (the so-called Mk2.5, facelift from 2008 onwards) were supplied with a Ford SYNC system. This touchscreen system uses VIN authentication instead of a radio code. Have SYNC? Then you don't need to enter a code after a battery change.

How do you recognise SYNC? It has a larger touchscreen and no preset buttons with numbers. When in doubt: if no "CODE" appears on the display after a power interruption, you have SYNC.
