Radio code Ford Kuga I

The Ford Kuga I has one big pitfall: the Ford 6000 CD and the Sony radio look almost identical from a distance, but you enter the code using a different button. Use the wrong button and the counter keeps ticking towards the ten-attempt limit. Which radio is in your Kuga I?

The Ford Kuga I (2008-2012) was Ford's first crossover and came well equipped. Two radio options:

Ford 6000 CD — standard

The Ford 6000 CD from Visteon is the standard radio in the Kuga I. Recognisable by:

No brand logo on the front panel, or "Ford" printed on it

Sony 6000 CD — upgrade option

The Sony version is the higher-spec option and has the same basic shape, but:

How can you tell them apart at a glance? Sony logo and a \ button = Sony. No logo, no \ button = Ford 6000 CD.

Retrieving the serial number

Both radios in the Kuga I use the V-code format: a serial number that begins with the letter V followed by six digits, such as V456789.

Steps for both radios:

Switch on the ignition. The radio may be on.

Hold button 1 and button 6 at the same time for three seconds.

The display starts an information cycle and shows the serial number at the end.

The serial number begins with V. Note down all seven characters (V + six digits). Can't see the serial number? Then you'll need to remove the radio and read the label.

Removing the radio from the Kuga I

Tools: four DIN removal keys (PC5-132 or Ford radio removal keys, around two to five pounds).

Switch off the ignition.

If present, remove the plastic trim surround around the radio (clip fittings, no tools needed).

Insert all four removal keys into the four holes in the corners of the radio front panel.

Bend the tabs of the keys outwards — away from the radio. Feel the spring clips release.

Pull the radio forwards carefully and evenly.

Disconnect the ISO connector and the aerial plug at the back. ### Serial number on the label After removal you'll see a barcode sticker on the side, top or bottom of the chassis. The serial number begins with V followed by six digits.

Entering the code

Here's the crucial difference between the two radios:

Hold button 5 for two to three seconds to confirm.

Locked radio

The Kuga I has a limit of ten attempts. After ten incorrect codes the radio displays "LOCKED". With LOCKED there's no waiting time: the radio stays locked until a Ford dealer or specialist service resets it using diagnostic software.

Don't guess if you're not sure. With the V-code serial number you can request the correct code the proper way.

Note: the Kuga II doesn't have a radio code

If you have a Ford Kuga II (2013-2019), you probably have a Ford SYNC system. SYNC 1, SYNC 2 and SYNC 3 don't require a radio code. After a power interruption the system simply starts up. Check your model year: 2008-2012 = Kuga I with code, 2013+ = Kuga II without code.
