Finding the serial number — where it is and how to read it

Without your radio's serial number you won't get anywhere. Most codes are calculated or looked up based on that unique number. But where exactly is it, how do you read it correctly, and what do the letters at the start mean? This article gives you a complete overview — including digital methods, so you often don't have to take the radio out at all.

Every car radio has a unique serial number that's directly linked to the security code. That number is on a sticker on or inside the radio. The manufacturer or dealer uses the serial number to look up or calculate the corresponding four-digit unlock code.

The serial number is also how you can prove that you're the rightful owner of the radio. No serial number, no code.

The first two or three letters of the serial number reveal who made the radio and which brand it's for.

The prefix determines which retrieval system or supplier you need in order to calculate the code.

Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda (prefix VWZ)

The sticker with the VWZ serial number is on the left- or right-hand side of the radio, and sometimes on the top too. It's a white sticker with black text. The serial number is fourteen characters long and always starts with VWZ.

Example format: VWZ1Z216768674

For the VW Golf V and the VW Golf VI: slide the radio out about five centimetres to read the sticker. The radio doesn't have to come out completely.

For Audi, Seat and Skoda the procedure is the same — same sticker, same prefix.

Ford (V-code or M-code)

On a Ford, the serial number is on a sticker on the top or back of the radio, but you can also read it directly off the display — see the digital method below. The format is a letter followed by six digits:

• V + 6 digits (2004 and later): V136429
• M + 6 digits (before 2004): M217854

Models such as the Ford Focus Mk2 and Ford Mondeo Mk4 almost always use a V-code.

Renault (prefix 2811 or PRE-code)

On a Renault, the sticker is on the right-hand side of the radio. The full serial number starts with 2811 and is fourteen characters long. The last four characters — one letter and three digits — are identical to the PRE-code you can read off the display.

Models: Renault Megane II, Renault Clio III, Renault Captur I, Renault Twingo II, Renault Megane III.

Opel (prefix BP)

On Opel models such as the Opel Astra H, Opel Corsa D and Opel Zafira B, the BP sticker is on the side or top of the radio. The number starts with BP followed by four to eight digits and letters.

Some Opel radios (CDC 40, CDC 400) have a slightly longer format. The number after BP is what you need.

Peugeot and Citroën (prefix BP)

Peugeot and Citroën radios made by Blaupunkt also use the BP prefix. The sticker is on the left- or right-hand side of the radio. Using the button-1+6 method (see below) you can read the PRE-code directly off the display — the same technique as with Renault.

Mercedes-Benz (prefix BE)

Becker radios in Mercedes-Benz vehicles have a sticker on the top or back of the unit. The serial number starts with BE followed by eight digits.

BMW

BMW radios (Philips, Becker or Pioneer, depending on the model and year) have the sticker on the right-hand side or top. The serial number is a combination of letters and digits with no fixed prefix that's directly visible from the outside.

Nissan and other Japanese brands (prefix PN or CL)

Clarion and Panasonic radios in Nissan models have the sticker on the side of the radio. The serial number starts with PN or CL followed by eight to ten characters.

For many brands you can retrieve the serial number, or something derived from it, directly without picking up a screwdriver.

VCDS for Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda

With a VCDS diagnostic tool (Ross-Tech) you can sometimes read the VWZ serial number via the OBD port:

1. Connect VCDS to the OBD port under the steering wheel.
2. Go to Address 56 — Radio.
3. Choose Advanced measuring blocks or Coding depending on the VCDS version.
4. The serial number is under measuring block 081 or in the identification data.

This works reliably on the RNS 510 and newer RCD variants. On the RCD 300 in older models (Golf IV, Polo IV) it's less consistent.

PRE-code for Renault (and Peugeot/Citroën)

The PRE-code is the quickest way to retrieve the serial number of a Renault or PSA radio:

1. Turn on the ignition. The display shows CODE or 0000.
2. Hold button 1 and button 6 pressed at the same time (the two outermost preset buttons).
3. After three to five seconds the display shows: one letter + three digits, e.g. V873.

These are the last four characters of the full serial number (2811xxxxxxxxV873). With just the PRE-code you can already request the radio code through RadioCodeOpvragen.nl.

V-code and M-code for Ford

Ford has the most efficient method: the serial number is shown directly on the display.

V-code (2004 and later, e.g. Ford Fiesta Mk6, Ford Focus Mk2):

1. Turn on the ignition. The display shows CODE.
2. Hold button 1 and button 6 pressed at the same time.
3. After a few seconds the display shows: V followed by six digits, e.g. V136429.

M-code (before 2004, e.g. Ford Ka, Ford C-Max I):

1. Turn on the ignition. The display shows CODE.
2. Hold button 2 and button 6 pressed at the same time.
3. After a few seconds the display shows: M followed by six digits, e.g. M217854.

If the digital methods don't work, the radio has to come out. There are three commonly used methods:

DIN release keys (Renault, Peugeot, Citroën, Ford)

Insert the four half-round or round release keys into the holes on either side of the radio. Push gently outwards until you feel a click. Then pull the radio straight out — the cables are long enough to read the sticker without disconnecting the connectors.

Product codes for release keys: CT22UV01 (universal), PC5-132 (Ford specific).

Torx T20 (Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda)

The radio is held in place by four Torx T20 screws behind a plastic trim panel:

1. Remove the plastic trim with a plastic pry tool.
2. Undo the four screws.
3. Slide the radio out five centimetres.
4. Read the sticker on the side.

Clip panels (modern cars)

Newer models don't have screws but clip or slide panels. Always use a plastic pry tool to avoid scratching the finish.

Stickers can fade, wear away or get damaged by moisture or heat. Try this:

• Good lighting: use a torch or shine your phone light straight at the sticker.
• Photograph and enlarge: take a photo with your phone camera and enlarge the image on the screen. Even partly illegible stickers can become readable this way.
• Clean sticker: gently remove dirt with a dry cloth. Don't use solvents — they'll damage the sticker further.
• Alternative sources: for VW, Audi and Renault the serial number is sometimes also in the dealer's order system, linked to the chassis number (VIN). Ask the brand dealer for this.
• VCDS as backup: on VW group cars, VCDS is the best backup if the sticker is illegible.

Is the sticker genuinely completely illegible and have all the digital methods failed? Then get in touch with the brand dealer. With the VIN they can look up the original serial number in their system, and sometimes even the radio code.
